Stewart McDermet is a vital part of so many of our local organizations and non- profits – many of which he started or revitalized. Simply put, Stewart has been a major player in making Brattleboro the compassionate community it is today. He also has some hidden talents, a way with plants, a love of historical restoration………...and one of the very best senses of humor ever.

Each month the husband and wife duo, Robin MacArthur and Tyler Gibbons, from Marlboro, Vermont write and record a song to be released on the day of the full moon. The beautifully layered, tunes have a backwoods feel are recorded in a barn, and sent out to subscribers. It’s an intimate and unique take on the ever growing DIY music scene.  The band will be playing at the Nelson Town Hall in Nelson, New Hampshire Thursday, August 1, and they joined us in the studio.

I lived in an old farmhouse in Iowa in the mid-âseventies. My landlord was ready to retire and his name was Perry Burns. He had a 200 acre form where he grew corn and beans, and at one time kept hogs and cattle. This story is based on the year that Perry had luck with his corn crop. It's called Horses. The character McCabe is based on Perry. The other characters are drawn from the farm people I knew then.

Vermont author Vincent Panellaâs imagination is filled with shady characters: bar-flies, gamblers, tough guys and loose women. These characters fill the pages of his new collection of short stories, Lost Hearts, but they share the stage with more ordinary people going through painful moments in their lives. Those ordinary people are the emotional center of the collection. Panella speaks with VPR's Peter Biello about his book. You can hear Vincent Panella read a whole story from the collection.

Claudette Colvin (born September 5, 1939) is a pioneer of the African-American civil rights movement. She was the first person to resist bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama, preceding the better known Rosa Parks incident by nine months. The court case stemming from her refusal to give up her seat on the bus, decided by the U.S. District Court, ended bus segregation in Alabama.

In the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Babushka Lady is a nickname for an unknown woman who might have photographed the events that occurred in Dallas' Dealey Plaza at the time President John F. Kennedy was shot. Her nickname arose from the headscarf she wore similar to scarves worn by elderly Russian women (бабÑÑка â babushka â means "grandmother" or "old woman" in Russian). In 1970, Beverly Oliver came forward and claimed to be the...
